Beat our Design and Engineering skills – The Bondtech Ultimate 3D Printed Spinning Top Challenge!
Are you ready to embark on a journey of Industrial Design and Engineering? We are thrilled to announce the launch of our groundbreaking worldwide contest: “The Bondtech Ultimate 3D Printed Spinning Top Challenge!” This is your chance to showcase your skills, push the boundaries of 3D printing technology, and compete for fantastic prizes.
The Challenge: Can You Outspin Us?
We’ve set the stage by designing what we believe to be the ultimate 3D printed spinning top. But here’s the twist – we’re challenging YOU to do better! We’ve poured our expertise into crafting a top-notch spinning top, and now it’s your turn to take up the challenge and show us what you’ve got.
Our blog post will guide you through our design process, including the rationale behind our design choices, the STL models we used, the .gcode files for printing, and the hardware utilized, such as the renowned Bondtech upgrade kit. We’ve even prepared a captivating video, capturing the mesmerizing spin from launch to stop, complete with an in-frame stopwatch to measure duration. It’s a whirlwind of excitement you won’t want to miss!
How to Participate: Let Your Imagination Soar
Are you ready to unleash your creativity and put your 3D printing skills to the test? Here’s how to participate:
- Design and print: Create your own spinning top masterpiece. Whether it’s a single part or a complex assembly, the sky’s the limit! You can also make launch tools to make it spin longer.
- Adhere to the rules: Ensure your spinning top meets our contest rules:
- maximum weight of 6g;
- diameter under 50mm;
- no supports allowed during printing;
- use PLA to make your spinning top;
- use a FDM 3D printer;
- post your video(s) between the 1st of October and the 31st of November of 2024.
- Capture the spin: Film a reaction video showcasing your spinning top in action on top of glass. Remember to use a handheld camera and a stopwatch in-frame to time the duration of the spin from launch to complete stop.
- Share your creation: Share your reaction video on YouTube and across social media channels, spreading the word about your innovative creation and tagging us for a chance to win!
- Use the following social media hashtag:
#BondtechSpinningTop - Use the following video title:

The Excitement Builds: Prizes Await
As the clock ticks down, anticipation mounts for our winners. On the 9th of December, we’ll crown a winner from each continent, along with a worldwide champion boasting the longest spinning time. It’s not just about the thrill of competition – there are fantastic prizes up for grabs, rewarding your ingenuity and dedication to pushing the boundaries of 3D printing.
The prizes below will be delivered as Christmas gifts, with paper wrap and bow included, and a card from Bondtech to the winner.
Additional Note: Design Tips for Maximizing Spin Duration
To all our enthusiastic participants, here are some design tips to help you craft the ultimate spinning top:
- Shape and Size: Keep your spinning top symmetrical and balanced, with a sharp tip for efficient spinning initiation.
- Weight Distribution: Ensure even weight distribution throughout your spinning top to maintain balance and stability.
- Surface Smoothness: 3D print the most polished surface you can, so your spinning top can reduce friction against the playing surface, allowing for longer spins.
- Aerodynamics: Streamline your spinning top’s shape to minimize air resistance, experimenting with different profiles to find the most efficient design.
With these tips in mind, let your creativity run wild and design a spinning top that will leave the competition in awe!
Our Spinning Top Design Choices
The important choices we made for our design was putting some of the weight as far out as we could for increased spin duration, while adding an airfoil to the spokes for increased lift and sharpening the tip in order to decrease friction.
The two piece center pin is fit in place using a 3 degree taper in order to shim itself in place. The center pin got some facets in order not to spin inside the top body.
