Silicone takes heat well, but not indefinitely. Every cycle up to temperature and back takes a little flexibility out of the material, and the change is gradual enough to miss. A sock that has stiffened no longer sits tight against the heat block. It lifts at the edges, opens a gap, and the filament it used to catch starts landing on bare metal instead.

That’s usually the first sign, rather than an obvious tear: buildup appearing where it didn’t before, and cleanup taking longer than it used to.

What it does

When to replace

Swap the sock if it feels stiff or brittle rather than pliable, if it’s torn, if it no longer seats fully against the heat block, or if you’re seeing more plastic on bare metal than usual. With a spare in the drawer that’s a two-minute job rather than a stopped print.
