About the Heat Break and Hot Block

The cutting-edge Stainless Steel and Copper Heat Break and the Copper Hot Block that Slice Engineering designed for the Copperheadâ„¢, are its biggest advantage against the competition. That’s why in many occasions, such as this one, the Heat Sink it self can be skipped, and users can keep the one that come with their printers.

How To Change Nozzles

When changing nozzles with this hotend immobilize the hot block before twisting the nozzle. Forcing the nozzle to screw in, or to unscrew, without holding the hot block steady, may cause severe damage to the heat break.

I installed this on a CR-10 Mini along with a DDX v3 and have been happy with the quality of my prints. It’s a solid upgrade from the stock hotend, and I no longer need to worry about PTFE shrinking creeping away from the nozzle when printing nylon continuously. The boron nitride paste, which you definitely want to use for the best performance, leaves a little to be desired when it comes to usability. I found that it dries out pretty quickly, and I’m not sure how effective it is if you’re putting together components while it’s already starting to crumble, so it took a couple tries to get everything together to my satisfaction. I don’t know what I can suggest to improve easy of application other than being quick, but it’s worth noting. Thermal performance is good, but I do wish there was a silicone sock available to make it even better for people who stay within temps where those don’t degrade.

I’m not convinced that the Copperhead hot block was a totally necessary upgrade for me, since I know people who are getting good results with just the Copperhead heat break upgrade on stock hot block and silicone sock, but the performance is certainly not worse. Temperatures, even without a silicone sock or insulation, are very stable even when part cooling is at max. I don’t print above 260C, so perhaps I’m not the target for a hot block rated for 450. I’m not unhappy with it; I just want to stress how much more important I think the heat break is in comparison.

The thermistor installation using the adapter is interesting. I’ll say that if this one ever fails, I’ll be replacing with something that doesn’t require an adapter. Getting it to sit in there just right in the end of the tube with paste while keeping the wires snug, but not too snug under the retaining screw, is a little bit of a challenge. Slice did what they could to allow people to use stock parts, so that’s understandable. It’s definitely a compromise though.

On to the heat break, which is by far the biggest upgrade in my opinion. This guy is the star of the show. This along with a direct drive kit will take your prints to a new level if you’re still on a stock bowden extruder an hotend. I found myself dropping temps a little, while still getting excellent layer adhesion and filament flow.

I think that only leaves the nozzle, which is totally fine. I have both the 0.4 and 0.6mm versions, and they seem well machined and true to spec. I am using brass since I have no need for abrasives at this time. This is as good or better than any other brass nozzle I’ve used.

5 stars for the Copperhead heat break, but for the reasons mentioned I feel 4 stars is my overall rating for this DDX PH2 kit as a whole. Thanks for the time and effort put into this, both Bondtech and Slice.
